The Illusion of Self: Peeling Back Layers of Maya

“I am” is the grandest illusion.

I remember lying in bed, a broken man in 2007, lost in despair. Everything I clung to – my marriage, children, friends, job – slipped through my fingers like sand.

I was a master of victimhood, wallowing in a self-created pit of anxiety and depression. Therapy, medication, self-medication; years spent in a haze of trying and failing, losing more than I ever gained. But it was in this descent, this stripping away of all I thought defined me, where my awakening began. You really think you are your thoughts, your emotions, your experiences?

What if I tell you they’re just shadows, flickering on the wall of your mind? That they’re maya, the cosmic trickster, making you dance to the tune of an illusory self? When everything is stripped away, what’s left?

That’s the journey we’re on.

From Descent to Awakening: A Personal Odyssey

The caterpillar doesn’t become a butterfly without dissolving first.

In 2019, everything changed. After a 12-year descent into darkness, I woke up. Not to a new day, but to a new reality.

From a TV-watching atheist in existential crisis to a spontaneous awakening, it was as if I had been struck by cosmic lightning. The real isn’t just about recognizing something out there; it’s about obliterating the unreal within. This was more than post-kundalini fireworks; it was a rebirth.

Everything I thought I knew about life, about myself, got turned upside down. It was terrifying, exhilarating, and utterly transformative. I emerged not just enlightened but as something else entirely…
