Your awakening stinks of fraud.
That spiritual enlightenment you’re so proud of might be the most sophisticated con job you’ve ever fallen for. The ego doesn’t surrender; it adapts, evolves, and strengthens its grip through apparent surrender.
Meet the Enlightened Ego: your ordinary ego wearing spiritual drag. That flash of insight, that moment when you thought you’d transcended your small self? Your ego watched, learned, and reconstructed itself using the very language of liberation. It swapped its business suit for flowing robes, its arrogance for “detachment,” its selfishness for “cosmic oneness.”
Now it operates from an unassailable position – after all, how do you question someone who claims to be beyond questioning? The ultimate defense is claiming there’s nothing to defend…
…while building fortresses in secret.
The Master of Disguise
Your ego fears extinction above all else.
When threatened by genuine spiritual insight, it performs its most impressive vanishing act. It doesn’t fight awakening; it becomes awakening. This shapeshifting is more dangerous than ordinary ego precisely because it appears to be its opposite.
Picture a chameleon that doesn’t just match its background but convinces itself it IS the background. Your spiritual ego has learned to mimic the characteristics of egolessness so convincingly that even you can’t tell the difference. It quotes your favorite teachers, uses the right terminology, and produces the perfect spiritual Instagram posts. It’s the ventriloquist making the puppet of awakening speak while hiding in plain sight. The more “awakened” you feel, the deeper its hooks sink. This masterful impostor doesn’t just wear the mask – it fuses with it at a molecular level.
When your friends roll their eyes at your spiritual pronouncements, you dismiss them as “still asleep.” That’s not clarity speaking…
…it’s fear disguised as wisdom.
Red Flags of Fraudulent Freedom
You stink of specialness and don’t notice the smell.
Your enlightened ego reveals itself through subtle signals that you carefully ignore. You’ve mastered the vocabulary of nonduality but still operate from duality’s core premise: there’s a special “you” who’s figured it all out.
You dismiss others’ suffering with “it’s all illusion” while nursing your own wounds in private. You crave spiritual recognition like an addict needs a fix. In conversations, you steer topics toward your insights, your awakening, your spiritual journey. When challenged, you don’t examine the criticism – you diagnose the critic. “They’re triggered,” you think, “projecting their own stuff.” Meanwhile, your so-called detachment is selective amnesia, remembering cosmic oneness during others’ problems but forgetting it during your own.
You’ve replaced self-improvement with spiritual improvement and called it transcendence. The scorekeeper didn’t disappear; it just learned to score different points. You don’t see yourself in this description because defense is what egos do best…
…especially the enlightened ones.
The Cosmic Narcissist Club
Membership requires advanced self-deception.
The enlightened ego’s favorite trick? Creating distance between “awakened you” and “those poor sleeping humans.” This separation is precisely what genuine awakening dissolves, not reinforces. The cosmic joke is that your spiritual superiority is absolute proof you haven’t gotten the punchline.
That warm glow you feel when explaining nonduality to the “unenlightened” isn’t compassion – it’s the same old ego getting its fix of superiority, just with better justification. You’ve created a new identity: Spiritual You, who understands everything deeply and feels sorry for others still caught in the dream. You meditate not to see truth but to maintain this inflated self-image. You retreat not to face yourself but to avoid having your enlightenment questioned.
The spiritual marketplace adores you – a self-improving customer for life, buying books, workshops, and retreats to make your special awakening even more special. Your enlightenment isn’t a liberation from identity…
…it’s identity on spiritual steroids.
The Impersonal Antidote
Truth doesn’t need defenders.
Genuine clarity arrives not as achievement but as demolition. It’s not your personal awakening – the very phrase exposes the fraud. It’s the recognition that the “you” claiming awakening is precisely what dissolves in actual awakening.
Watch for the warning signs: Do you feel special? Do you mentally position yourself above others? Do you need to be recognized as awakened? These aren’t signs of clarity but of an ego in spiritual costume. The test is simple but brutal: does your awakening increase or decrease your sense of personal importance? Does it make “you” more or less significant in your internal narrative? If you’ve graduated from “I’m important” to “I’m spiritually important,” you’ve merely changed classrooms in the same school of delusion.
True clarity isn’t personal enhancement; it’s seeing that the personal perspective was the limitation all along. The antidote isn’t accumulating more spiritual understanding. It’s seeing what’s operating right now…
…the “you” that’s reading these words, claiming liberation.
The Unmasking Never Ends
See it. Then see it again.
The enlightened ego isn’t something you defeat once and celebrate victory over. It’s a chameleon that adapts to every new level of awareness you reach. Your only protection is relentless self-honesty.
When you catch yourself feeling spiritually superior, don’t despair or deny. Just notice. That noticing is the light the ego cannot survive in. The enlightened ego thrives in the shadows of assumption, in the places you refuse to look, in the certainty that you’re beyond all this nonsense already. But each time you drag it into awareness, it loses power – not forever, but for now. This isn’t about becoming some perfect egoless being; it’s about the willingness to see through your own spiritual posturing again and again.
The path isn’t toward permanent enlightenment; it’s toward permanent honesty. You don’t transcend the ego by fighting it. You see through it by facing it…
…every moment, every disguise, every time.
These last several pieces are especially hard hitting. All escape routes taken away. I think I should simply start reading these aloud while standing in front of the mirror. Thank you again.
